No. 1 in the West! Chongqing Ranks First in the Number of Open Ports in Western China

Chongqing Customs recently reported that as of the end of 2023, Chongqing boasted three official national open ports and one temporary open port, placing it first in the western region of China. Additionally, Chongqing Customs' 10 innovative measures for the Free Trade Zone have been registered with the General Administration of Customs, positioning the city among the top nationwide. Notably, Chongqing stands as the sole city in China to house "five types" of national logistics hubs, encompassing water, land, air, production service, and trade service.

Among Chongqing's open ports, there are 10 distinct functions, including designated supervision sites for imported meat, fruits, grain, chilled aquatic products, edible aquatic animals, plant seedlings, complete vehicles, drugs, international mail, and Kimberley diamonds.

By the end of 2023, the variety of goods transported via the railway-sea combined trains of the New Western Land-sea Corridor had surged from over 50 in 2017 to over 1,100. These goods radiated to 144 railway stations in 70 cities across 18 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities nationwide. Chongqing's goods have reached 490 ports in 120 countries and regions globally.

In 2023, Chongqing transported a total of 178,000 TEUs of goods via various transportation methods, including the railway-sea combined transport of the New Western Land-sea Corridor, international railway combined transport, and cross-border highway bus. This marks a 21% year-on-year increase, with a total value of 27.924 billion CNY, accounting for approximately 30% of the total volume of goods transported by provinces along the corridor.

Looking ahead, Chongqing aims to secure national support to develop an open port system comprising "one hub, two centres, and multiple nodes". This includes focusing on building the main urban hub, establishing northeastern and southeastern port development centres, and planning and arranging open nodes with port functions in various districts and counties of the city.
